Former asylum seekers turned restaurateurs are extending a Burundi-to-Detroit pipeline of meals, tradition and occasional by Soko by Baobab Fare.
Hamissi Mamba and his spouse, Nadia Nijimbere, arrived in Detroit after fleeing Burundi, finally discovering housing and help at Freedom Home Detroit, a shelter for asylum seekers. From there they constructed Baobab Fare, the East African restaurant that opened in 2021 on the nook of Woodward Avenue and West Grand Boulevard and shortly turned a New Heart anchor and group hub.
