With one store newly relocated and a second cafe now open, Necessity Espresso is asserting itself as a must-visit model north of San Diego.

In January the corporate reopened in Encinitas within the shade of a mighty ficus tree on the nook of 2nd and F Streets, simply 4 blocks south of its now-closed authentic location. This month, Necessity opened an all-new second location in San Marcos, a number of miles inland.

Coffees from experimentation-friendly Colombian producers akin to Elkin Guzman, Rodrigo Sanchez, Nestor Lasso and Sebastian Ramirez are imported with help from Ally Espresso. Runion works with Selva Espresso for greens from Costa Rica, Onyx Espresso for greens from Guatemala, amongst others.

Runion launched Necessity as a web based roaster then opened first cafe in Encinitas a number of months later in 2023 with a 2-year lease and a cart-based bar.
